Via the constitution of the Aquitaine-Basque Country Euroregion, an end is brought to a process initiated two years ago, in November 2009, during the Aquitaine-Basque Country summit held in Bordeaux. According to the Lehendakari, the Euroregion will enable the two territories to work together in areas of mutual interest, such as health, education, research and the environment, allowing them to act with "greater force and recognition in the heart of the Union". "We must transmit the idea to our citizens and companies that working, studying or researching in Aquitaine is the same as doing so in the Basque Country and vice versa", Patxi López affirmed. The Lehendakari is convinced that the Euroregion will become a platform to enable "our voice to be heard, that will be able us to influence decision making and that will enable us to confront the complexity of this global world".

The agreement reached between the Basque Country and Aquitaine represents an increase in the Basque Country's scope for action and provides access to a new framework for interaction, whilst affording us sufficient "size to be competitive", the Lehendakari stated. Mr López emphasised the need for the Union to strengthen its democratic decision-making bodies and ensure that the regions "are afforded the means to have their voice heard and participate in decision making that affects us". Patxi López is convinced that the development of the Aquitaine-Basque Country Euroregion will prove to be a "success".
