Report: "2008 Youth Indicators. Comparative study between the Basque Country and the European Union"
The Basque Youth Observatory has published the second volume of the collection, Basque Youth Overview (Panoramica de la Juventud de Euskadi), which was launched in 2007, in order to inform Basque society of some key economic, social and demographic indicators that affect Basque youths.

Indicadores de juventud 2008

Titled 2008 Youth Indicators: Comparative Study between the Basque Country and the European Union  (pdf, 180 kb), this work describes and provides an in-depth study of the socio-demographic and labour situation of Basque and European youths.

The comparative analysis has been performed at three territorial levels: European Union (25 states), European Union (12 states) - (Germany, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, United Kingdom and Sweden) and the Basque Country. Apart from the territorial perspective, the chronological development (1980-2005) of the indicators are also analysed as well as the differences and similarities based on sex and age groups.

This volume has been structured into eight thematic chapters: population development and density; relationship between age groups; birth, maternity and fertility rates; marital status; life expectancy and mortality levels; migration; occupation.

In each chapter, the statistical data comes with an overall and theoretical explanation as well as a description of recent trends in each case and ends with a set of conclusions that include the most relevant results obtained from the comparative analysis process.

The statistical indicators that provide the basis of this overview of Basque and European youths have been taken from secondary official sources such as Eurostat, INE and EUSTAT.

The result is a work that displays significant aspects of the lives of Basque youths, comparing them with youths from the rest of the European Union.

Some of the conclusions reached are surprising and invite readers to reflect on the important social and economic changes that are taking place.
