The three priorities of the future energy policies of the Basque Country will be, according to Lehendakari Patxi López,  energy efficiency, diversification of sources and renewable energies. This morning, López inaugurated the European Future Energy Forum at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre, accompanied by the Delegate of the Central Government in the Basque Country, Mikel Cabieces, the President of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, José Luis Bilbao and Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Executive President of Masdar.

The Lehendakari expressed his conviction that renewable energies have great potential for the future and asked companies in the energy sector to apply all their know-how and efforts to overcoming existing technological restraints in order to generate more competitive, cleaner and safer renewable energy sources for all human beings and for the planet as a whole.

To achieve this, the Lehendakari drew attention to the strength of the Basque business sector, which, together with this region's network of experienced technology centres, will allow the Basque Country to play a leading role in the race to develop new technologies over the coming years.

Patxi López also highlighted the significance of the fact that Bilbao was chosen as the scenario for the first European Future Energy Forum. From June 9 to 11, the Forum brought together more than 3500 international business leaders and top political figures from 40 countries at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC).
