Presentation:
The Basque Delegation in Mexico, created under Decree 72/2002, dated 20th March, was a pioneer among delegations in Latin America, as a result of which it is fully up and running and developing its activities highly satisfactorily.
Generally speaking, we can say that this delegation concentrates more on economy and industry, as corresponds to a country which, together with Brazil, constitutes one of the principle Latin American markets for Basque entrepreneurs. We mustn't forget that, due to its belonging to the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, Mexico is a particularly attractive country for commercial exchange or different business projects.
This factor, together with the existence of another Free Trade Agreement, in this case with the European Union, makes it extremely important to analyse collaboration possibilities and take a deeper look at the idea of the Basque Country as a strategic partner and doorway to Europe.
The Delegation has fostered relations with Mexican institutions and others in third countries, businesses and associations, multilateral bodies, universities, development agencies, Basque collectivities, and has collaborated in exporting our model of urban development while promoting Basque language and culture, among other activities.
With respect to the future, we also intend to work on creating an area of influence permitting sectorial actions in countries geographically close to one another, studying the possibility of developing triangular cooperation, and of collaborating with all of the international networks in which the Basque Government or other Basque institutions participate, with the purpose of achieving the greatest possible local implication, of continuing to develop sectorial policies, particularly in the economic-industrial sphere, while serving as an organ channelling the Basque Government's foreign communication policy.
