The Basque Autonomous Region or Euskadi has 2,140,908 inhabitants, nearly 42% of which live in Gran Bilbao (Bilbao and adjoining municipalities in the banks of the Nervión River). The population density is 302 people per square kilometres, more than half the European average and very similar to that of the most developed countries. Over 65% of the population is between 16 and 65 years of age. Each of the three provincial capitals has over 180,000 inhabitants.
