The Basque Country offers a wide variety of opportunities to practise a great number of sports: trekking, hiking and climbing, hang gliding, gliding, surfing, sailing, swimming, golf, tennis, handball, rugby, football and basketball, etc. In total, there are 6,500 associations and sports clubs, 3,218 different sports facilities, 328 tennis courts, 14 golf courses and 8 marinas, etc.
Basque pelota forms part of the deepest tradition in its different forms: Hand Pelota, Pala, Remonte, Cesta Punta, Trinquete and Xare, etc., and also cycling, with an international team - Euskaltel-Euskadi - and great cyclists such as Joseba Beloki, Iban Mayo, Haimar Zubeldia, Igor Antón, Unai Osa, David Etxebarría and Igor Astarloa, the last-mentioned winning the World Road Cycling Championship in 2003, and Joane Somarriba, a female cyclist who has won two Italian Giros, three FRench Tours and, in 2003, the World Championship against the clock.
